Nonfiction Selection Aids

Some of the standard professional journals commonly found in the media center do an excellent job of reviewing nonfiction materials. Among my personal favorites are:

School Library Journal. A publication of R. R. Bowker Company, this periodical has a special nonfiction section in which it gives signed evaluative reviews of nonfiction materials. Both print and nonprinnt materials are included, and grade levels for which the resource is appropriate are given.

The Book Report. This comes from Linworth Publishing and is geared more to the higher end of children's resources. It also contains signed evaluative reviews and grade level indicators for resources. Reviews of print and nonprint materials are broken into subject matter to make looking for materials to support a specific part of the school curriculum easier and less time consuming.

Booklist. An ALA publication, this selection aid has two categories to break child readers into middle readers and youth. This speeds up the process of browsing through the reviews for materials for a certain age group. Nonprint media are lumped together into one section, but this is small enough to be manageable.
